Fairlington’s History Is Hiding in Plain Sight

by Sueyen Rhee

Fairlington is one of Arlington’s most iconic garden-style communities—and it has a fascinating origin story. Built quickly between 1942 and 1944 to address a critical housing shortage during World War II, it was a federally backed project meant to house defense workers supporting the war effort. At the time, it was the largest apartment-style development of its kind in the country.

One unique feature you’ll find in the Barcroft model floor plan is the separate exterior entrance to the lower level. Back then, this clever design allowed for more housing flexibility, accommodating additional residents without building new units. Today, that same entrance provides private access to a flexible basement space—perfect for a home office, guest suite, or rental.

As someone who regularly works with buyers and sellers in Fairlington, I always enjoy showing these homes. It feels like stepping into a piece of living history. It's amazing that a 1940s government housing project ended up being so popular and appealing today.

Whether you're thinking of buying or selling in Fairlington, or you just love a good neighborhood story, Fairlington’s history (and charm) make it worth exploring

I’ve helped clients all across Arlington and I’d love to help you too. If you have questions about the neighborhood or want to start planning your next move, feel free to reach out anytime.
